London: In the midst of a debate over whether they are good for kids, a new study has suggested that video games could be used for education.
An international team has carried out the study and found that online computer games could be used as a powerful teaching tool for children because they are not only popular but engaging as well.
According to researchers, interactive games could be adapted so that children learn skills from them that could be transferred to real life – in fact, the "immersive" aspect in which the player suspends his belief means that the brain is particularly engaged and can absorb complex issues.
What's more is that the games, which they say are more active than passive traditional learning, could be most useful for science subjects with students able to carry out imaginary experiments and improve their ability to "learn to learn", the study has found.
"Compared with a similar, paper-based curriculum that included laboratory experiences, students overall were more engaged in the immersive interface and learned as much or more," team leader Prof Chris Dede of Harvard University was quoted by 'The Daily Telegraph' as saying.
According to the scientists, interactive games such as 'World of Warcraft' and 'Second Life' as well as 'Whyville' and 'River City' are good for kids.
Agreed Dr Merrilea Mayo, Director of Future Learning Systems at the Kaufman Foundation: "Unlike lectures, games can be adapted to the pace of the user. Games also simultaneously present information in multiple visual and auditory modes that capitalises on different learning styles.
"Although the field is still in its embryonic stages, game-based learning has the potential to deliver science and maths education to millions of users simultaneously. Unlike other mass-media experiments in education, games are a highly interactive."
Former President A P J Abdul Kalam on Saturday advocated a three-pronged strategy to combat Terror which included raiding and smashing militant hideouts both inside and outside the country.
Firstly, a vigorous national campaign, involving every citizen, should be launched to tackle the terror menace, he said interacting with students in Hamirpur.
Secondly, Kalam advocated carrying out raids to destroy terror hideouts both inside and outside the country.
"Terror can be eliminated by raiding and smashing militant hideouts both inside and outside the country," he said.
Lastly, there was need for speedy trial of cases relating to terrorism to punish perpetrators of such crimes, he said.
The ‘Missile Man’ voiced concern over rising incidents of terror in the country which, he said, were posing a ‘big threat’ to the country.
The former President was answering questions, ranging from the terror scourge to his personal life, fielded by students representing several schools in Hamirpur.
Then, addressing annual convocation of the National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, Kalam emhasised the need to make NITs a partner in development of the country.
Kalam exhorted the NIT authorities to adopt 20 senior secondary schools for enhancement of quality education in the country.
He advised the young NIT engineers to form working groups on each pillar of development and come out with suggestions as how to make an academic institution of the repute of NIT, a partner in the development of the country.
Kalam said such efforts would be helpful in fulfillment of vision 2020 for India.
The former President administered an eight-point oath to the graduating students to bring about professional efficiency in their practical life and contribute significantly towards nation with their technological skills.
Kalam gave medals to outstanding NIT graduates in the function.

No one likes to walk into work after just a few fitful hours of sleep. But now there's evidence that not getting enough sleep may have more serious consequences than dark circles under your eyes the next morning. Researchers at the University of Chicago report in the Journal of the American Medical Association that too little sleep can promote calcium buildup in the heart arteries, leading to the plaques that can then break apart and cause heart attacks and strokes.
The University of Chicago team documented for the first time exactly how much of a risk shortened shut-eye can be — one hour less on average each night can increase coronary calcium by 16%. Among a group of 495 men and women aged 35 to 47, 27% of those getting less than five hours of sleep each night showed plaque in their heart vessels, while 11% of those sleeping the recommended five to seven hours did, and only 6% of subjects sleeping more than seven hours each night showed such atherosclerosis. "We were surprised by the findings," says Diane Lauderdale, a professor of health studies at the University of Chicago and lead author of the study. "We really were not expecting to find an association at all, and certainly not one that was this strong."
Exactly how a lack of sleep is feeding plaque in the heart arteries isn't yet clear, but one explanation may involve inflammation. Too little sleep can raise cortisol levels, which fuels inflammation that can destabilize plaques. Once these deposits rupture, they can block vessels in the heart or brain, causing a heart attack or stroke. While the Chicago team did not track levels of cortisol to test this theory, future studies might.
A simpler explanation might involve blood pressure. In general, blood pressure dips during sleep, and over a 24 hour period, people sleeping less will have shorter periods of lower blood pressure, thus increasing their tendency to dislodge any unstable plaques.
Whatever the reason might be, the results of this study make it clear that sleep isn't just for dreamers. Getting enough sleep might just save your heart.

A suicide bomber sneaked into a luncheon gathering called by the leader of a local tribe, killing 30 people and wounding 110 on Friday, police said.
The blast in Youssifiyah was the deadliest attack in Iraq since a suicide bomber killed 55 people at a cafe in Kirkuk on Dec. 11.
Youssifiyah is in the Sunni-dominated region south of Baghdad once known as the Triangle of Death because of its extreme violence. The bloodshed declined markedly in 2008, but violent rivalries persist throughout Iraq.
The bombing was at a meeting hall adjacent to the residence of Sheik Mohammed Abdullah Salih, head of the Sunni al-Garaqul tribe.
Police, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release information to the news media, said the sheik had invited tribal senior figures and other members to lunch. The bomber was an outsider who managed to get into the house, police said.
A witness said he and a friend were standing a few yards from the entrance to the meeting room when the bomber blew himself up. "What an aftermath we saw — shattered glasses mixed with blood, everybody on the ground, a bad smell, blood, remains of bodies stuck to the wall," said Ismael Abu Ayab al-Qaraghuli.
Also Friday, gunmen killed two people when they opened fire on a checkpoint manned by members of the Sons of Iraq in Jurf al-Sakhar, police said. Four other people were reported wounded in the attack 40 miles south of Baghdad.
The Sons of Iraq consist of Sunni insurgents and tribesmen who turned against al-Qaida in Iraq and joined the U.S. military in the fight against the terror group.

Pakistan government gave some statements towards their mumbai incident likely to be "We want to maintain a good relationship with India but at the same time we are ready for war at time". So it doesn't seems a proper and responsible answer from them.
Cluster bombs are nothing but cluster of bombs are air-dropped or ground-launched munitions that eject smaller cluster of bomblets. The most common types are intended to kill enemy personnel and destroy vehicles. Submunition based weapons designed to destroy runways, electric power transmission lines, deliver chemical or biological weapons, or to scatter land mines have also been produced.
In between these once again there was a serial bomb blast at ASAM(North part of India) parliment. Government still investigating the suspect and its still under process.
